On January 24th, 2011 a police official of Toronto stated in relation to female sexual assault that "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized"
Sexual assault is usually kept secret, and now if you live in Toronto you would be deterred from reporting the crime, because ladies you would be the one to blame.
"Historically, the term ‘slut’ has carried a predominantly negative connotation. Aimed at those who are sexually promiscuous, be it for work or pleasure, it has primarily been women who have suffered under the burden of this label." This is what is stated on the SlutWalk Toronto site.
Women should be able to dress however they want. Women are seen as sexual beings, in literature at least, and psychologically, but that does not mean that they desire sexual assault.
The fact that a man can judge what you wear and declare a dominant mindset is an ignorant act and wrong.
My father had said in reaction to this, that Muslim women are completely covered and do not draw the same attention as females do who wear scantly clad clothing. My response is that both women wearing complete head to toe coverage and those who wear barely any clothing receive ridicule.
Maybe there is some insight into this rebellious, almost release from the entrapment of head to toe coverage that gives women the allusion of freedom and where men, correct women by calling them sluts.
There is the down side to being covered head to toe as well, not only is it an outward expression of repression of speech and female power, it is a covering of the physical female power.
For those of you who have trouble understanding the analysis of the burqa read A Thousand Splendid Suns and it will open your eyes to the Muslim world, in both a loving sense and a troubled one.
The next Slut Walk will be taking place in April 2012.
