This generation

Born in the nineties, we find that we are more mature than those of younger generations. Television has changed for these younger generations, lifestyle, parenting. We find ourselves trapped in an image we cannot escape. The perception of teenagers on television are not only closely accurate to how teenagers act today, but also impose on teenagers how they should act in today's society. Both females and males have certain ways in which to act.

Females are meant to be sexy, easy, smart but not too smart or that is not very attractive, as well as being catty and bitchy to other females. Females must be two-faced to get along in society. This form of action does not only carry out through high school and college years, but also into the business world. When one woman rises to power there is always another woman biting at her heals waiting for her to fail rather than support her. Males on the other hand, remain very simple creatures in the fact that they only need sex, food, sleep, and money to get them by. If a marriage fails its usually due to the failings of one of the needs listed. Men are taught especially through the media to refrain from emotion, where women will always wish for more expression from them, to express power in the work place and the home, and to get what they want.

The parenting that used to involve wooden spoons and harsh words, now falls under sweet whispers, cries of sorries, and the child goes off and continues the chaos. Not that one would condone violence, but the parenting skills have significantly decreased in the years. That is what begets the vicious cycle from childhood, teen years, to adulthood, and then the cycle starts again. It doesn't help to have shows like the Jersey Shore where they are out to party and get laid all the time. These are what children watch today. Shows on Nickelodeon and teen nick often show teenagers struggling with sex and drug related problems. This had not always been the case. These shows only cause more concern in the house hold and put more of a focus on sex and drugs. Exposure to these things at such a young age feeds into the problems. Body image and self-esteem issues are another problem that the younger generations of today suffer with. Advertisements do not help this either.

Hopefully there will be some cataclysmic change that will help these younger generations from falling further into dispair and continuing this viscious cycle.
